Request to Increase Filename Byte Limit for Wikimedia Commons & Wikisource Uploads
[རྩོམ་སྒྲིག]The current filename byte limit for uploaded files on Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource, which is set at 240 bytes, poses a challenge for users who wish to use non-Latin scripts, such as Tibetan, for file titles. Since Tibetan characters typically use 3 bytes each in UTF-8 encoding, the effective number of Tibetan characters allowed in a filename is significantly restricted (around 60-80 characters). This makes it difficult to create descriptive and meaningful filenames in such scripts and restricts the representation of cultural and linguistic diversity in file naming. Moreover, most ancient Tibetan manuscripts have long titles, and shortening them creates confusion with other manuscripts and it dilutes/misrepresents the original work of the author.
Increasing the filename byte limit could:
- Enable more expressive and accurate file naming in languages with complex scripts.
- Enhance inclusivity and usability for Wikimedia Commons & Wikisource contributors worldwide.
- Support better organization and retrieval of files through meaningful titles.
